Christ or Tolerance?

Some recent trends in Christian publishing give me great cause for concern. In the name of tolerance, some publishing houses are asking writers to sanitize the Gospel by removing overt allusions to Scripture, to Christ, and to God. One reason being given is that doing so will cause our writing to appeal to a larger group of people, particularly the unchurched.

What these publishers are actually saying, in my opinion, is that proclaiming Christ openly may cause the following to happen:

  • We may lose sales and/or our reputation.
  • We may be threatened by those who oppose Christianity.
  • We don’t have the courage to stand up for Christ.

My intention is not to offend anyone, but I am deeply concerned about what I view as the increasing complacency of the Body of Christ toward the things of Christ. It seems as though the world has invaded the Church, to the grave danger of both.

Jesus said in Mark 8:38: “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” May the publishers (and writers) in question carefully re-examine these words of our Lord, and may they choose to follow Christ, no matter what the cost.

  1. Hi MaryAnn –

I agree with you, MaryAnn. Unfortunately, this trend isn’t limited to publishing. There are those who want to leave God out of every aspect of life.

The question is: Are we going to sit back and allow that to happen or take a stand for Christ?

  2. Bravo. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, as well as challenging us. Standing up for the Gospel has never been a popular thing, and it’s less popular than ever. It’s also more necessary. I pray the Lord gives us all the courage to continue to stand up for the One who proclaimed Himself “the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”

  3. I vote for Christ! We need to stand firm and speak the truth in love with spoken words and those in print. I applaud you, Mary Ann. Thanks for being bold for Jesus.

  4. Here Here! Great post! I think we all need to stop worrying about being “politically correct” and stand up for the Truth! We were told that Jesus’ message would be offensive to those who don’t believe. I’d rather lean on pleasing God than pleasing man!
