Syndication is the goal of many columnists. If you write columns, you may wish to consider duplicating your efforts through syndication.
What is syndication? In its simplest terms, syndication is doing the work once while multiplying your circulation. It is doing the work once while multiplying your influence. It is doing the work once while multiplying your profits.
There are basically two types of syndication: self-syndication and industry syndication. The latter is more difficult to break into, but a whole lot easier to manage.
When you syndicate your columns, you publish them in more than one newspaper or magazine. If you self-syndicate, then you are responsible for setting up accounts with the newspapers, for submitting your columns to them on a timely basis, and for handling all paperwork. When you syndicate your columns through an industry syndicate, the syndicate handles all of those details.
Years ago I self-syndicated my column, Winning with the Word, to several newspapers throughout New Jersey. Although I tried to send the same column to all newspapers at the same time, the different publication schedules of the various newspapers made it virtually impossible to adhere to my schedule. So I had to keep close track of what I sent where.
Around the same time, I was writing another column for the AMY Internet Syndicate. Working with this industry syndicate was a lot easier because I did not have to handle the distribution of the column. It reached newspapers all over the United States, but all I had to do was write the column.
Both syndicate options are viable ways for you to get your message out on a consistent basis. The question to ask is which option is better for you.
