Pitching is an art, and one we need to master if we’re going to get anywhere as fiction writers. So what is a pitch? In essence, a pitch is a short commercial fory our novel. It is a one-sentence summary of your story that includes its key points in such a way as to attract the attention of an editor.
Former literary agent Nathan Bransford has developed an outstanding template for creating your pitch:
When OPENING CONFLICT happens to CHARACTER, she has to OVERCOME CONFLICT to COMPLETE QUEST.
Take this template and apply it to your current story idea. Doing so will require you to think through the key elements of your story. But when you’ve finished, you will have created a pitch worthy of your novel.
If you’d like to share the pitch you’ve created based on Bransford’s template, we’d love to read it.
