“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23

If you were to ask me what two virtues are the most important in relating to people, I would say, without hesitation, grace and truth. Moreover, I would say that grace and truth must be present in every encounter we have with people. Why?
First of all, Scripture commands us to keep grace and truth at the forefront of all of our dealings with others:
“Do not let grace and truth leave you —bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and esteem in the sight of God and of people.” ~ Proverbs 3:3-4 CJB
Second, grace (an expression of love) and truth are the foundational principles of all good relationships. We run into problems when we separate grace and truth. Grace without truth will lead to deception. Truth without grace will lead to rebellion.
For example, if I speak the truth to you but do so harshly or without compassion, I will drive you away from truth. Likewise, if I show you grace and mercy but lie to you about your harmful behavior, I will cause you to stray into deception.
Grace and Truth: Keep them tied around your neck and written on the tablet of your heart. If you do, you will find favor with both God and man.
Questions: 1) Is there anyone to whom you have spoken the truth without grace (love)? 2) If so, what happened? 3) Is there anyone to whom you have shown grace without truth? 4) If so, what happened?
