You and Your Spirit-Soul Connection

YOU AND YOUR SPIRIT-SOUL CONNECTION

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
________________________________________

Harmony, sign series for music, singing, choir and bandsLast time we explored the Rule of Three as it relates to your soul, aka heart. Today, we’re going to explore the soul as it relates to your spirit.

You are a three-part being.  First of all, you are a spirit. Then you have a soul. Finally, you have a body that houses your spirit and your soul

Each of your three parts (spirit, soul, and body) is also comprised of three parts. Last time we said that your soul is made up of your mind, your will, and your emotions. Your body is made up of water, tissue, and bones. Your spirit is made up of your conscience, your intuition, and your communion with God.

The soul and the spirit have different functions, yet they are intimately connected and affect your daily life. When your soul (your heart) and your spirit are in harmony, you will experience peace and joy.

How can we get our souls and our spirits to be in harmony? The most important key is to understand that your spirit was designed by God to rule your soul and your body.  But, unless your spirit is connected to God (communion), your spirit will not be able to do its job properly. In fact, a spirit disconnected from God will wreak havoc on your soul and your body.

So, the first rule of order is to make sure your spirit is connected to God.  How? By accepting Jesus as your Savior and Lord. (If you don’t know how to do this, click here).

Once your spirit is connected to God, it can begin to commune with God.  This means that your spirit will begin to hear from God, to talk with God, to receive from God.  Romans 7:6 says that we serve God “in the new life of the spirit.”

Understanding that your soul is separate from your spirit and must be subject to your spirit is critical when dealing with matters of the heart.  When we confuse the two, we get into trouble. Watchman Nee wrote: “But sad to say, due to long years of bondage to the soul, many Christians know very little of their spirit. We ought to tremble before God, asking Him to teach us through experience what is spiritual and what is soulish.”

If you are confused about the different functions of your soul and your spirit, ask Holy Spirit to reveal this difference to you. Read the Word of God diligently.  In Hebrews 4:12 we learn that ” . . .  the Word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

The Word of God will help you to understand the spirit-soul connection.  As you grow in this understanding, you will learn how to submit your soul to your spirit and, in so doing, to experience the joy and peace God intends for you.

Your Heart and the Rule of Three

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
________________________________________

Die 3 SchritteIf you’ve ever studied art or literature, you may have come across what is called ‘the rule of three.” This rule basically states that each discipline reflects a triune nature.

For example, music has melody, harmony, and rhythm. Art has three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue.  Geometry has length, width, and height. In Chemistry, we speak of liquids, gases, and solids. In history, we discuss past, present, and future. And in fiction writing, we build our stories with a beginning, a middle, and an end.

Wherever we look around us, we can find the rule of three in operation. Why is this so? It is so because the entire universe reflects the trinitarian nature of God. He is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And, amazingly, man is made in God’s image. Man, therefore, is also a trinitarian being made up of a spirit, a soul, and a body.

It is no wonder then that the entire universe speaks of God in the rule of three.

So, what does the rule of three have to do with your heart?  Your heart–aka your soul–also has three parts: the will, the intellect, and the emotions.  When those three parts are in harmony with one another and in harmony with the nature of God, then your heart will be at peace.  But when one part of your soul is out of harmony with the other two parts and out of harmony with God, your soul will suffer and hurt.

For example, let’s say your intellect knows that it’s wrong to be unkind but when that crazy driver cuts you off and nearly smashes into you, you react in anger.  In such a case, you have created a conflict between your intellect and your emotions, and your will has sided with your emotions.  You broke the harmony that should have existed among your intellect, your will, and your emotions.

Of the three parts of your soul, the will is the part that needs to be in control. Your intellect may know the right thing to do, but your emotions may keep you from doing it. It is your will that will keep you from doing something stupid, like expressing anger at a crazy driver.

But there is one more thing. Your soul must be subject to your spirit, for your spirit is that part of you connected to the Spirit of God.

Next time, we will explore how your soul and your spirit are related and how your soul must be subject to your spirit in order for you to experience peace.

Self-Actualization: Our Culture’s Most Pernicious Lie

SELF-ACTUALIZATION: OUR CULTURE’S MOST PERNICIOUS LIE

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
________________________________________

Anyone who has taken Psychology 101 has most likely studied Abraham Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs.”  At the top of his list is the need for self-actualization–the need to achieve one’s potential, to seek self-fulfillment, and to experience the maximum one is capable of experiencing on this earth.

business strategy concept infographic diagram illustration of hierarchy of needs pyramid

business strategy concept infographic diagram illustration of hierarchy of needs pyramid

What is so pernicious about Maslow’s hierarchy is the fact that it sounds so good and so true. After all, who among us does not want to achieve his fullest potential? Who among us does not want to be fulfilled? Who among us does not want to experience the maximum of which we are capable?

So, wherein lies the pernicious lie?

If we look closely, we will see that the word “self” is the focus of Maslow’s theory. Life is all about the self. All about what I can achieve.

All about me!

This way of thinking is diametrically opposed to what Jesus taught: “If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it” (Matthew 10:39 TLB).

Those who adhere to Maslow’s theory–and this includes our culture at-large–believe that the self is the center of the universe. For many, there is nothing outside the self, and if there is, it is subject to the self.

Consider “the Force is within you.”  Have you ever stopped to ask “What Force?”

We who follow Yeshua understand exactly what that Force is. It is the force of Satan himself, disgusing himself as an angel of light, something Scripture says he does (2 Corinthians 11:14) and does quite well, I might add.

The Word of God gives us this admonition in Colossians 2:8: “See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.”

How can we know if what we are believing is deception?  There is only one way, and that is to immerse oneself in the Word of God until it transforms our thinking and aligns it with God’s thinking.

Guarding the heart means protecting it from deception. Deception is another word for the Lie. Satan is doing a good job of convincing our world that the answer to life’s deepest questions lies in the self. But the truth is that the answer to life’s deepest questions can only be found outside the self and only in Jesus Christ.

Are Lies Hurting Your Heart?

ARE LIES HURTING YOUR HEART?

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23

Scales, advantage truthDo you know that the health of your heart depends on your believing the truth? The more truth you believe, the healthier your heart (soul) will be.

Not only does the health of your heart depend on your believing the truth, but the degree of freedom you experience in life depends on your believing the truth.

Truth and freedom are intimately and inseparably intertwined. Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).  Have you ever wondered why we in America have experienced so much freedom? It is due to the fact that our Founding Fathers believed the truth and built our country on it.

Have you also wondered why we in America are now losing many of our freedoms? The reason is that over the last sixty years or so, we have gradually been moving away from the truth.

What is truth? Prominent theologian RC Sproul says this: “Truth is defined as that which corresponds to reality as perceived by God.”  Apologist Ravi Zacharias adds that “The single most important question any human being can ask is the question, ‘What is truth’?”

So, again I ask you, “What is truth?” Do you know the answer to that question? Have you ever asked yourself that question? The answer you give has serious implications for your heart.

Pontius Pilate asked Jesus the same question just before our Lord’s crucifixion. But Pilate asked mockingly, not with a sincere desire to know the truth.

Do you have a sincere desire to know the truth? This question was posed to me 45 years ago.  At the time, I had a burning desire to be free of the bondage in my life. When I discovered that knowing the truth would make me free, I began a life-long journey to know truth. What I discovered is that Truth is not a thing. Truth is a Person, and that Person is Jesus Christ.

Jesus is Truth Personified. To know Him is to know Truth. To know Jesus is to know Freedom.

If there is any bondage in your life, you can be absolutely sure that there is a lie behind it. Knowing Jesus will set you free from the lie.

So, our primary task in life is to pursue Jesus. As we discover Him, He will shatter the lies that have us bound. As those lies crumble, our freedom will grow, as will our love for Him Who set us free.

Do you want to know the truth about who you are in Christ? If so, read YOU WERE MADE FOR GREATNESS! and discover how to recognize and destroy the lies in your life.  You Were made for Greatness

Running Your Race to Win

RUNNING YOUR RACE TO WIN

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
________________________________________

Run to successIf you are a follower of Yeshua, you are in a race.  Your goal is to win the race, and your prize is God’s call upward to Heaven in Christ (Philippians 3:14).  In other words, you are running toward the eternal prize of salvation in Jesus Christ.

How is your race going? Are you strong and steady, or slow and shaky? Are you going full speed ahead, or are you running out of steam? Are you close to giving up, or have you already stopped running?

If you’re finding that your race seems overwhelming, here are a few tips to help you catch a second wind:

1) Ask Holy Spirit to fill you again. And again. And again. And again. To follow Jesus, we need a continual infilling of Holy Spirit’s power.  One drink from His well is not enough.  A runner needs water while running.  We need the living water of the Holy Spirit to replenish us while running our race.

2) Take time to worship the Lord. Worshiping God through singing, dancing, and quiet meditation will get your spiritual muscles working again. Worship is one of the best ways to renew your strength so that you can keep on running your race.

3) Pray in tongues. Scripture says that praying in tongues (also called praying in the spirit) builds up the one who is speaking in tongues (I Corinthians 14:4).  Speaking in tongues recharges your spiritual battery, giving it renewed power to continue your race.

4) Stay focused on your goal. Satan will send distractions in the form of trials and temptations to get you off track. Just when things are going well in your race, he will place an obstacle across your path.  Expect these distractions and prepare for them through prayer and fasting. Let nothing keep you from finishing your race.

5) Rely on the Lord to help you.  Our Lord is invested in your race. He is right there with you, encouraging you to finish.  Keep your eyes on Him.  If you do, you will finish your race and receive the crown of life that God promises to those who endure to the end (Matthew 24:13).

Are you running your race with Jesus as your goal? To help you do so, read YOU WERE MADE FOR GREATNESS! and discover how to compete for the only prize that matters: Jesus Christ!  You Were made for Greatness
