What’s Wrong with Doing Your Own Thing?

The Dangers of Self-Sufficiency

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines

the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23

Frank Sinatra’s hit song, I Did It My Way, pretty much sums up the philosophy of our culture. While I generally appreciate the voice and songs of Mr. Sinatra, I have to admit that my Italian compatriot missed it big time with this song, not musically, necessarily, but philosophically and ideologically.  You see, doing things our way will lead only to death and destruction.

Why?

An angry senior man pointing the viewer to the left, the same way the "Highway" arrow points, as opposed to the "My Way" arrow above it. On a white background.

Because as much as we may like to think so, this life is not about us. It is about Jesus Christ. Until we embrace that truth, we will go through life thinking it’s all about us until something big happens that brings us to the end of our rope, with no resources left. Then we’ll realize that we can no longer do things our way because our way didn’t work.

So, by whose way should we do things?  There is only one correct answer to that question, and the answer is “God’s way.”  God has set specific laws in motion that bring blessings. If we violate those laws, we will miss the blessing. Instead, we will experience the curse.

In Deuteronomy 28, God lists all the blessings that will be ours if we obey Him. He also lists all the curses that will come upon us if we do not obey Him.  In Deuteronomy 30: 19, He says this: This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.

In Proverbs 14: 12, we read: “There is a way that seems right to a person, but eventually it ends in death.” Bible commentator Adam Clarke wrote: “The grand sin of the human race is [its] continual endeavor to live independently of God . . . .” This was Adam and Eve’s sin, and it continues to be humanity’s sin today.

So, decide now that you are going to live your life God’s way. Then watch for His blessings to pour into your life, so much so that you will not have enough room to contain them.

How can you know God’s way? Come to Jesus and study the Bible. It is His love letter to you, teaching you the right way to live your life.

  1. Yes, yes and Yes. Good timing, too, MaryAnn; sometimes I think I am overly reliant instead of being self-reliant. This is excellent for me to read. Blessings.
