I recently had occasion to minister to a person struggling with a feeling of being abandoned by God. Due to some tragic circumstances that had occurred in his life, he felt that God did not love him. Despite the Scriptural proof that I gave this young man that God did, indeed, love him, the young man could not get past his feelings of being unloved.

This young man’s decision to make his feelings the final arbiter of truth represents a very dangerous phenomenon at work in our culture today. It is a lie that goes way back to the Greeks, and even before them. It is the lie at the root of secular humanism that denies the existence of absolute truth and makes relativism the final authority of one’s life.

Consider what havoc this lie has wrought in our society. It has led to abortion, homosexuality, transgenderism, and euthaniasia. It is the new expression of Cartesian philosophy. Descartes is famous for saying, “I think; therefore, I am.” Today’s culture says, “I feel; therefore, I am.”

So, if I am a woman but “feel” like a man, then I can simply change my gender.  Or vice versa. 

Carried to its logical conclusion, this deception becomes ridiculous. As my husband wisely asked, “What would happen if I were to put on a black robe, walk into the Supreme Court, and announce that I am a Supreme Court Justice just because I feel like one?” We all know what would happen! 

Yet, that is exactly what is going on when a man decides he is a woman simply because he feels like one, or a woman decides she is a man simply because she feels like one. As a culture, we have denied the existence of absolute truth, and we are now seeing the fruit of unrestrained relativism which makes personal feelings the final determinant of one’s actions and the final determinant of what is true.

We are NOT what we feel. Feelings lie. They fluctuate, sometimes moment by moment. They change from day to day. Yet, our society has elevated feelings above reason. In so doing, we have built our lives on sinking sand. 

Feelings are NOT the arbiter of truth. God’s Word alone is the arbiter of truth. Unless and until we return to God’s Word and make it the foundation of our lives, we will fall farther and farther into the abyss of absurdity and what the Bible calls “the depraved mind” (Romans 1: 28).
