Years ago, shortly after college, I made a career decision that I later came to regret. At the time, I had not been born again, and I didn’t know enough to pray and ask God for direction before making a decision. Also, I had no clue God had a plan for my life far different from my own plan for my life.

Over the subsequent years, that career decision filled me with regret. When I finally accepted Christ as my Savior, He began working on my heart to show me that the decision I had made would redound to my benefit. Indeed, now nearly half a century later, I can say that what I thought was a wrong decision did, indeed, redound to my great good.

How?

1–That seemingly wrong decision set me on a path that eventually led me to an encounter with Christ.

2–That seemingly wrong decision resulted in my marrying my wonderful husband of almost 49 years.

3–That seemingly wrong decision moved me into God’s true calling for my life–to write for Him.

What about you? Is there something in your life you regret? A sin? A decision? A lost opportunity? No matter what you wish you hadn’t done or hadn’t said, or had done and had said, when you turn to Jesus–in repentance, if necessary–He will bring good out of your regret.

Regret is a form of grief, and like all grief, it needs to be resolved in order for life to go on as God meant it to go on.  But remember this: Jesus took our griefs. In Isaiah 53: 4, we read this: “Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.” So give your regret to Jesus and receive His joy in exchange.

The Apostle Paul had much to regret. Before encountering Christ, He murdered Christians. Yet, Paul said this about his life: I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead” Philippians 3: 13.

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” – Romans 8: 28

Let’s follow Paul’s example and choose to forget the past and to look forward to what lies ahead. For those who are in Christ, what lies ahead can only be for our good.

My Prayer for You Today: Lord Jesus, I ask You to comfort all those suffering from regret. Give them revelation knowledge that, in Your mercy and grace, You will cause everything that has blighted their past to work for their good because they love You and are called according to Your purpose. Amen.

Now, it’s YOUR turn: Have you experienced regret over something in your past? If so, how have you dealt with it?

Welcome to the last post in our series on soul sickness and its connection to physical sickness. Last week, we talked about “soul fragmentation,” another term for the tearing apart of the soul that occurs during times of trauma. Today, we’re going to discuss alters.

What is an alter?

First of all, an alter is not an altar. 🙂 These two words are often confused. The latter is a structure found in a church for the purpose of worship. An “alter” as it relates to the soul is similar to a fragment in that it protects the soul from the effects of trauma by walling off a portion of the soul from the main core of the soul.

While a fragment is simply a walled-off part of the soul, an alter can have a personality distinct from the soul’s core personality. In such cases, a person is often diagnosed as having a mental disorder, such as Dissociative Identify Disorder (DID), formerly called “Multiple Personality Disorder.”  People who have been severely traumatized can have numerous alters.

Another difference between a fragment and an alter is that a fragment does not have a false personality of its own, whereas an alter does. For instance, when a present-day event triggers an alter that is connected to a past traumatic event, the alter responds according to its false personality rather than according to the true personality of the person’s soul. In other words, the person comes under the control of the alter. This is the reason some people say that when they react in a negative way, they feel as though it is someone else reacting and that they are simply observing a movie playing out before their eyes.

“The Lord restores my soul.” – Psalm 23: 3

So, what is a person to do if his soul has been torn apart into fragments or alters?

1) Believe that Jesus wants to restore your soul. He promised as much in Psalm 23: 3. Only Jesus can heal a fragmented or altered soul. So, the first step to take, if you have not already done so, is to invite Jesus Christ into your life and receive Him as Your Savior and Lord. Here’s how.

2) Ask Holy Spirit to reveal to you what soul fragments and alters you are dealing with. As He shows them to you, give them to Jesus one by one for His healing touch.

3) Seek the help of Christ-Followers trained in deliverance ministry or a Christian counselor trained in dealing with fragments and alters. There is help for you out there if you just look for it.

Remember this: As you look up to Jesus, trusting Him to heal your broken soul, He will. And as your broken soul is restored to wholeness, your body will also be restored to health.

My Prayer for You Today: Lord Jesus, we thank You that You restore our souls. We thank You for taking the broken pieces of our soul, for healing them, and for restoring them back to their original place where You intended them to be. Amen.

Now, it’s YOUR turn: Are you dealing with soul fragments or alters? Have you experienced healing of soul fragments and/or alters? If so in either case, I invite you to share your experiences. Please leave your valued comment in the box below.

NOTE: If you think you are in need of deliverance ministry, please write to me at info@maryanndiorio.com. I will be happy to pray for you.

Last week, we discussed the results of Adam and Eve’s sin on the human soul. We considered the three parts of the soul—the mind, the will, and the emotions—and the function of each part. In this week’s post, we’ll be exploring some different kinds of soul sickness, focusing particularly on “soul fragmentation.”

What is soul fragmentation? Soul fragmentation is simply another term for the tearing apart of the soul. This tearing apart occurs during times of trauma.

When we experience a traumatic event, we cope with the trauma by placing the intense emotion and memory caused by the trauma in a special part of our soul and walling it off from the rest of our soul. Depending on the severity of the trauma, if we didn’t wall it off, we would likely not be able to go on with life. These parts that are walled off are called fragments.

All of us experience soul wounds during our lives. Many of these wounds begin in the womb and in early infancy and childhood. Others result from our own sin. Unless dealt with, these wounds last a lifetime, affecting our relationships and every aspect of our lives.

Every time the soul is wounded, it is fragmented in some way. The Bible describes this fragmentation in several different terms:

  1. A tearing apart or rending: “Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver” (Psalm 7: 2);
  2. A destruction: “But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul” (Psalm 6: 32);
  3. A disturbance or an unsettling:–“Since we have heard that some of our number to whom we gave no instruction have disturbed you with their words, unsettling your souls….” (Acts 15: 24);
  4. A defilement or a polluting:–“Then said I, ‘Ah Lord GOD! behold, my soul hath not been polluted: for from my youth up even till now have I not eaten of that which dieth of itself, or is torn in pieces; neither came there abominable flesh into my mouth;'”
  5. A cutting off from a group:–“Therefore every one that eats it shall bear his iniquity, because he has profaned the hallowed thing of the LORD: and that soul shall be cut off from among his people” (Leviticus 19: 8);
  6. An imprisonment:–“Free my soul from prison that I may praise Your name” (Psalm 142: 7).
  7. Double-Mindedness.–“A double minded man is unstable in all his ways” (James 1: 8).

Sometimes, the soul can be so badly fragmented as to result in severe mental illness.

God designed the spirit and the soul to communicate with each other. Because of the fall of Adam and Eve, this line of communication was severed. So, before we are born again, the spirit and the soul are separated from each other. But when we are born again, the communication between the spirit and the soul is restored.

“Sometimes, the soul can be so badly fragmented as to result in severe mental illness.”

The soul, however, is not saved when we are born again in the same way that the spirit is saved. When we are born again, we are given a new spirit that is perfect, but we are not given a new soul. The soul still suffers the vestiges of Satan’s attacks upon it and must be renewed by the Word of God (Romans 12: 2). These vestiges often require deliverance ministry in order to be completely removed. Deliverance severs communication between the demonic realm and the soul and results in the soul’s restoration to wholeness by the power of God.

In addition to wrongs that are done to us, our own sin greatly damages our souls. Peter wrote this: Dear friends, I warn you as ‘temporary residents and foreigners’ to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls” (1 Peter 2: 11). Sexual sin, especially, has grave and deleterious effects on the soul (See my post titled “Sex and Soul Ties”).

How the Soul Is Fragmented

1–Involvement in witchcraft. Witchcraft opens the door to soul fragmentation. Any time a demon is allowed to gain control over the soul, fragmentation and bondage occur. Note Ezekiel 13: 20: “Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘See, I am against the magic charms with which you ensnare souls like birds, and I will tear them from your arms. I will free the souls you have ensnared.'”

2–Abuse, physical or verbal. Abuse can cause some of the worst kinds of soul fragmentation. When a soul is severely fragmented, it can result in what psychiatrists call “multiple personality disorder.” Years ago, I went with a team from my church to minister at a local mental institution. My heart grieved as I saw that many of the patients there suffered from multiple personality disorder and other types of soul fragmentation, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. They lived in another world mentally and had been severed from truth.

Self-abuse, in the form of drug addiction, alcoholism, gluttony, Satanic music, participation in New Age practices and in false religions, also severely fragments the soul.

Soul fragmentation as expressed in mental disorders often does not respond to therapy and medication because such modalities do not address the real issue: demonic infiltration, oppression, and even possession.  These can be dealt with only by the power of Jesus Christ administered through Christ-Followers trained in deliverance ministry.

3–Making vows to false gods or to occult or Satanic organizations of any kind; for example, the Masons or the Rosicrucians.  Making such vows imprisons the soul and ties it to the organization or false god to which the vow was made.

If you think you are suffering from soul sickness, there is hope for you!  In my next and last post on soul sickness, I will discuss alters, which are similar to fragments but more severe than fragments. We will also discuss the wonderful news that your soul can be fully restored by the power and blood of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord!  Don’t miss this last post of the series!

My Prayer for Us Today: “Father, we come to You in the Name of Jesus, thanking You for Your mercy and grace. We receive Your healing power to restore our souls. What Satan meant for evil, we trust You to turn to our good. We trust that You will take our ‘mess’ and turn it into our ‘message.’ In Jesus’ name. so be it!”

Now, it’s YOUR turn: Are you beginning to see that your sickness may be due to diseases in your soul? If so, you are experiencing a revelation from God because he deeply loves you.  Please leave your valued comment in the box below.

NOTE: If you think you are in need of deliverance ministry, please write to me at info@maryanndiorio.com. I will be happy to pray for you.

Last week, we explored some signs of soul wounds and how they can make the body sick. We learned that sickness of the soul is often reflected in sickness of the body. In fact, most physical sickness begins in soul sickness. The sicker the soul, the sicker the body. Conversely, the healthier the soul, the healthier the body.

So, it behooves us to seek soul health in addition to physical health. In fact, seeking soul health first may go far in eliminating many physical ailments.

Just as there are many kinds of physical illness, so are there many kinds of soul illness. But before we get into them, let’s take a look at what comprises the soul.

The human being is made up of three parts: spirit, soul, and body. Contrary to some teaching, the soul is not the same as the spirit. Scripture makes this clear in 1 Thessalonians 5: 23: “Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again” (Underlining mine).

With this truth in mind, let’s take a look at what comprises the soul part of us. The soul is comprised of the mind (aka intellect), the emotions, and the will. (Have you noticed that we are triune beings [spirit, soul, and body] and that each of those three parts is also triune?)

Your mind or intellect is that part of your soul that knows, thinks, analyzes, and remembers things.

Your emotions comprise that part of your soul that expresses the various emotions like love, anger, grief, and desire.

Your will is that part of your soul that chooses and makes decisions.

“The sicker the soul, the sicker the body. Conversely, the healthier the soul, the healthier the body.”

When Adam and Eve sinned, the result was catastrophic. Not only was man’s spirit separated from God, but man’s soul was ruined. Ephesians 4: 17-18 tells us that our soul was “darkened” and we became “alienated from the life of God” because we became “ignorant.” We could no longer think straight (mind). We began to experience and express negative feelings (emotions). And we began to rebel against God (will).

When we are born again, we receive a new spirit—perfect in every way because Christ now indwells our spirit. But when we are born again, we do not receive a new soul or a new body.  Those will come after we die.

So, what are we to do now with our wounded souls and weak bodies while we are still on this earth? Romans 12: 2 gives us the answer: “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

As our minds (one part of the soul) are transformed by God, our emotions and our will (the other two parts of the soul) will experience more and more healing. As a result, our bodies will experience more and more health.

To renew our minds simply means to align our way of thinking with God’s way of thinking. It means to turn away from the lies we have been believing about God and about ourselves to the truth God wants us to believe about Him and about ourselves.

How do we renew our minds? Through the continual study and application of God’s Word to our lives.

There are many kinds of soul sickness. In fact, any one part of the soul can be sick—the mind, the will, or the emotions. But sickness in one part will affect the other two parts.

Next time, Lord willing, we will explore some kinds of soul sickness. We will talk about “soul fragmentation”—what it is and what to do about it.  Finally, we will discuss the wonderful truth that Jesus can and will restore our souls as He promises in Psalm 23.

My Prayer for Us Today: “Lord, thank You that You are able and willing to bring healing and restoration to our wounded souls. We receive Your healing today in Your Precious Name. Amen.”

Now, it’s YOUR turn: Do you believe that God not only can heal your soul wounds but that He wants to? Please leave your valued comment in the box below.

THE SOUL ROOTS OF SICKNESS – Part One

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines

Are you sick in your body? The real problem may be in your soul.

Much, if not most, physical illness has its roots in a wounded soul. The condition of the soul affects the condition of the body.

The following Bible verse backs up this truth: “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers (3 John 2, NKJV, underlining mine).”  We are in health to the degree that our soul is in health.

Well, what if our soul is not in health? What if our soul has been deeply wounded through trauma, rejection, Satanic ritual abuse (SRA), child abuse (sexual or otherwise), or other demonic activity in our lives? What can we do if this is the case?

In this multi-part series of blog posts, we will explore the deleterious effects of a wounded soul and what to do about them. We will learn that Jesus meant what He said when He told us in Psalm 23 that He “restores our soul.”

First of all, let’s define a soul wound. A soul wound is a wound in the soul that has not been confronted and resolved.

Many times we are not even aware of soul wounds because they often occur in utero, in infancy, or in early childhood. Satan uses these times of intensified vulnerability to wreak his havoc on a child’s soul.

Sadly, most parents—even Christian parents—are unaware of their child’s spiritual vulnerability to Satanic attack. Consequently, they do not know to protect their children from these attacks.  As a result, Satan establishes strongholds in the child’s life that can last a lifetime if not recognized and dealt with.

“A soul wound is a wound in the soul that has not been confronted and resolved.”

Signs of Soul Wounds

What are some signs that our soul has been wounded?

__Lack of joy. Scripture tells us that “the joy of the Lord is our strength” (Nehemiah 8: 10). Joy and happiness are not the same thing. We can be unhappy about a situation but still be joyful in the midst of it. If our joy has been depleted, we may be suffering from a soul wound.

__Offense. Am I easily offended? Do I feel that people are out to get me?

__Self-Condemnation. Am I frequently down on myself? Angry at myself for making a wrong decision or for messing up? Unable to forgive myself for something I said, did, or didn’t do?

__Defensiveness. Do I feel the need to defend myself? To prove that I am right? That I am worth something?

__Shame. Am I carrying around a hidden secret that I can’t share with anyone because I am afraid I would be rejected if I did?

__Deep sadness / Depression. Do I frequently feel hopeless? Does the future look bleak? Have I lost the will to live?

These are just a few signs of possible soul wounds. In future posts, we will look more closely at how soul wounds develop, how they cause sickness, how they affect our lives and our relationships, and what to do to be healed of them.

My Prayer for Us Today: “Lord, please reveal to us the wounds of our soul so that we may come to You for healing and restoration. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
