Chief CPA Amy Torelli is tasked with auditing Enson Pharmaceutical’s Milan Office by Wendell Conklin, her boss and president of Enson International. He informs her that the firm is losing money despite excellent sales but finding out why is only part of her job. He tells her to use her gift of “discernment” to discover who is at fault and to protect herself from potential danger. “Be wise as a serpent and as gentle as a dove,” he warns. What she finds will keep you reading to the end.

American born vice-president of Enson Milan, Ted McMasters, Texas “run-away preacher-turned-executive” has sworn off having a love life for good. He goes to the airport expecting to greet a non-nonsense, middle-aged auditor, and is surprised—and a bit shaken—to learn Amy Torelli is brilliant, beautiful, and young.

I enjoyed this story that’s set in Italy. The vivid descriptions of Milan, the cathedral there, and lovely Lake Como made me feel as if I were there.
Amy Torelli is sent from New York to audit the books of the Italian branch of the pharmaceutical company for which she works. She and Ted McMasters, the branch vice-president, discover discrepancies in the books. Interpol becomes involved. The Mafia is implicated in the crime.
Amy and Ted discover they’re both originally from Texas and have much in common. The developing attraction between them is full of emotional conflict. Both feel insecure and have a deeply rooted fear of being rejected because of past experiences. They both harbor feelings of unforgiveness towards their fathers. Amy starts to let go of distrust and to fall in love with Ted. She begins to realize with Ted’s help that God, her Heavenly Father, has been beside her all these years. Then everything comes crashing down around her. As the auditing progresses, Amy uncovers evidence that points to Ted as the embezzler. Her trust in men is once again shattered into many pieces.
