______________________________________________

Hello and Happy Day! This is Dr. MaryAnn Diorio, Novelist and Life Coach, welcoming you to another episode of Winning with the Word. Today is Monday, June 1, 2020. Today’s Podcast is Episode #22 in Series 2020 and is titled “Are You Thinking Straight?”

You might be wondering, What a strange question to ask? Am I thinking straight? Yet the truth is that my question is one of the most important questions you may ever be asked in your life. Your answer to that question will determine whether your life turns out well or turns out badly.

Okay, Dr. MaryAnn. Aren’t you getting a little melodramatic here? After all, how I think is how I think. What difference does it make how I think, if the thoughts are my own?

The fact that you made that statement and asked that question is proof that you are not thinking straight.

So, before we go any farther, let’s define what is meant by “thinking straight.” Thinking straight means thinking in line with Truth. But then we have to ask another question: What is Truth? You may remember that a Roman governor of Judea, named Pontius Pilate, asked that same question of Jesus just before Jesus was crucified (John 18: 38).

The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ is Truth. He Himself said of Himself in John 14: 6, “I am the Truth.” Jesus is the Word of God, and so is the Bible. This makes Jesus and the Bible one and the same. So, logically speaking then, if Jesus is Truth, and if Jesus and the Bible are one and the same, then the Bible is Truth.

So, if the Bible is Truth, and if thinking straight means thinking in line with Truth, then thinking straight means thinking in line with the Bible.

Let me ask you another question. Are you thinking in line with the Bible? Do you even know what’s in the Bible? If you don’t, then how can you think in line with Truth?

We must know Truth in order to think in line with Truth.

Truth is a Person. Truth is Jesus Christ. If we don’t know Jesus Christ, Who is Truth, then we cannot live in line with Truth.

So, the first order of business is to get to know Jesus Christ. How? By accepting Him as your Savior and Lord. When you do, you will be born again, and you will begin to comprehend Truth.

We live in a world in which most of the information we receive is controlled by people who do not know Truth. People who do not know the Bible. People who do not know Jesus Christ. Indeed, people who are blatantly opposed to Jesus Christ and, therefore, to Truth.

The information we receive from such people is contrary to Truth, yet most of the public believes their lies. When we believe a lie, we will suffer the consequences of believing a lie.

To believe a lie is to put ourselves in bondage. To believe the Truth is to experience freedom. Jesus Himself said, “You shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall make you free.”

We are fast losing many of our freedoms today. Have you asked yourself why? The reason is that, as a culture, we have chosen to embrace the lie instead of embracing the Truth.

We will be free to the degree that we embrace the Truth.

Do you want to be free? Then embrace the Truth. Embrace Jesus Christ. He is waiting to set you free.

Pray this simple prayer with me:

Lord Jesus, I come to You now, just as I am. I want to know Truth. I want to know You so that I can be free. I receive You now as my Savior and Lord. Make of me what You created me to be. In Your Name I pray. Amen.

If you prayed this simple prayer, please write to me at drmaryann@maryanndiorio.com. I would like to send you a little booklet that will help you get started in your walk with Christ. I also encourage you to get yourself a Bible and read it every single day. The Bible is God’s love letter to you, His manual for your life and for He will help you to come to Him and to grow in Him and to become all that He created you to be. In the Bible, God reveals Who He is, and He instructs you how to live.

Finally, ask the Lord to lead you to the church of His choice for you where you can learn about Him and have fellowship and encouragement with other Christ-Followers.

For those of you who may not know, I write fiction about many of the issues I deal with in this blog and podcast. My latest novel, In Black and White, recently won First Place in Historical Fiction in the 2020 Christian Indie Book Awards Contest. MARYANN’S NOTE: At Holy Spirit’s direction, I wil be posting a few personal experience stories over the next few weeks. These experiences happened to me over the past several years and reveal God’s supernatural presence and power in our lives. I trust that these stories will bless you, encourage you, and reveal to you how much God loves you and is involved in your life as well.

WHEN GOD GOT PERSONAL
by MaryAnn Diorio, PhD, MFA

“She looks pale,” the pediatrician said as he examined my two-month-old daughter. “I want to run some blood tests on her.”

The year was 1977. The month was November. My husband, our firstborn daughter Lia, and I had recently celebrated the joyous arrival of our second child. All seemed well in our world.

At the doctor’s words, my heart clutched. “What do you think is the problem?”

His eyes reflected concern. “I’m not sure just yet. Let’s wait to see what the blood tests show.”

I swallowed hard and nodded. I don’t know what’s happening, Lord, but whatever it is, I will trust You.

I had been a follower of Jesus Christ for seven years. During that time, I had gotten to know Jesus through reading His Word, through prayer, and through fellowship with other believers. But I didn’t want only to know Jesus vicariously through the experiences of others. I wanted to sense His pulse. To see Him in action.

To feel His heartbeat.

As I read the Gospels, I noticed that people experienced Jesus. They had life-changing encounters with Him that affected their lives in personal ways. Encounters that touched them physically, emotionally, and psychologically. Encounters that changed the course of their lives.

I wanted to be a character in the Gospels. I wanted to be able to say that Jesus was not only the Savior of the world but that He was the Savior of my world.

The pediatrician turned toward me. “I’m ordering a test at the children’s hospital in the city. You will not be able to feed Gina for twelve hours prior to the test since it requires that she be fasting.”

My heart sank. My baby nursed every two hours. To deprive her of food for an entire twelve hours seemed impossible.

I mumbled a thank you and left the doctor’s office with my baby cradled in my arms and with both of us cradled in the arms of Jesus.

On the drive home, I cried out to God in anguish. “Lord, I can’t bear the thought of my Gina screaming in hunger throughout the night. You have to do something!”

The test was scheduled for a couple of days later. The night before the test, Gina fell asleep at 7:00pm. For the first time in her young life, she slept all through the night!

But not only did she sleep all through the night, she was also still asleep when my husband and I put her in the car to go to the hospital. She slept during the entire one-hour trip to the hospital. She went into the test asleep, and she awakened only after the test was over at 9:00am. Fourteen hours of straight sleep! And fourteen hours with no food. At that point, I had a hungry baby on my hands.

My heart overflowed with thanksgiving as I gave glory to God for this miracle.

My husband and I returned home with our baby to await the test results. When they arrived shortly thereafter, they revealed the presence of an incurable lymph gland disease with a prognosis of a life span that would most likely not exceed nine years.

Fear clamped its sharp claws around my mind and whispered its ugly lies. “Your daughter is going to die.”

Braced with the Word of God, I attacked that spirit of fear with the vengeance of an angry mama bear protecting her cub from danger. “Oh, no, Satan!” My words shot through the air. “You are a liar and the father of lies. My God says that my Gina was healed by the stripes of Jesus. And what He says is true. So I silence you, foul spirit of fear, in the Name of Jesus.”

As my circumstantial world spun in a violent downward spiral, my spirit resisted and soared to grab hold of God’s promise of healing. I could not let my baby die. I would not let my baby die. In His Word, God said she was redeemed from the curse. I could stake my child’s life on that truth.

In obedience to our Lord’s command in Mark 16 to lay hands on the sick, and in accordance with His promise in the same chapter that if I did so, the sick would recover, my husband and I laid hands on our precious baby daughter and commanded the sickness to leave her body.

A pole shift occurred in the spirit realm as my Gina’s life shifted to a new axis, the axis of Truth. I fully expected her to be healed. The thought of her not being healed had no permission to enter my mind.

A few days after laying hands on my baby, I sat in my family room worshipping the Lord while Gina slept in her cradle beside me. As I worshipped and thanked Jesus for healing my baby, I felt compelled to turn on the television. I recognized the Holy Spirit’s prompting and obeyed it.

At the very instant I turned on the TV, Dr. Pat Robertson of the 700 Club was praying. He looked up at the camera and said, “There is a baby in the TV viewing audience with a lymph gland disorder, and God is healing her now.” Instantly, a sensation of warm oil poured over me, covering the top of my head and flowing down over my entire body. I jumped out of my chair and shouted, “That’s my Gina! That’s my Gina!”

I called my husband. A physician himself, he wisely advised that we obtain medical confirmation of Gina’s healing. When I took her back to the pediatrician, he ran repeat tests and could find no sign whatsoever of disease. The word of knowledge Dr. Robertson had brought forth proved true. My Gina was healed!

And I had experienced Jesus in a tangible, personal way. He had shown me His heart.

And His heart was to heal.

Today, my Gina is a beautiful, healthy 39-year-old young woman serving the Lord with all of her heart. She is a living testimony to God’s healing power and to the truth of His Word.

Most of all, she is a living testimony to the God Who proved to me that He wants to bring salvation not only to the entire world, but especially to my personal world.

_______________________________________________________________

Welcome to Week 4, the final week in our discussion on freedom!

During the past three weeks, we have explored the Keys of the Kingdom of God that belong to every born-again follower of Jesus Christ. Today we conclude our study on the Keys of the Kingdom by exploring some reasons that we Christ-Followers are not seeing more of the Kingdom’s promises being manifested in our lives. On the contrary, we are still experiencing many of Satan’s curses, such as sickness, lack, and strife.

Kingdom - Gold text on black background - 3D rendered royalty free stock picture. This image can be used for an online website banner ad or a print postcard.

While I certainly don’t claim to have all the answers, I have learned a few things about the Kingdom during my 46 years of following the Lord. Here are a few insights about the Kingdom that I would like to share with you:

1–God’s Kingdom promises are true, no matter what. Scripture tells us that God is not a man who lies (Numbers 23: 19). He says what He means, and He means what He says. When God makes a promise to us, He cannot and will not renegue on that promise. To do so would violate His nature and His character, and He would then not be God. So, because of God’s perfect, flawless character, we can stake our lives on what He says every single time.

One of Satan’s chief strategies is to try to get us to doubt what God has said. This was the strategy he used with Eve, and this is the strategy Satan still uses today. Remember that Satan is a liar and the father of lies (John 8: 44).

2) The Keys of the Kingdom always work when we work them. In order for the Keys of the Kingdom to work, they have to be used–and used correctly. The Keys of the Kingdom work by faith. It is faith that pleases God, and it is faith that is required to use the Keys of the Kingdom correctly.

Contrary to popular belief among Christians, God does not respond to our pleading, our whining, or our tears. He responds to our faith–and only to our faith. Faith is the bridge between the Kingdom of God and the Earth. Like a magnet, our faith draws from the Kingdom of God whatever we need to fulfill our destiny here on Earth.

3–Circumstances do not equal doctrine.  Far too often in the Church today, I come across believers who base their theology on their circumstances rather than on the Word of God. In other words, if their circumstances do not align with what God has said in His Word, then they question the Word, not themselves.

For example, God says He heals ALL of our diseases (Psalm 103: 3). So, if I pray for healing but it does not come, then I question God. I might even blame Him. Oh, I may not blame Him outrightly, but I say things like, “Healing is not for today,” or “God doesn’t want to heal everyone,” or “God is sovereign and can heal whomever He wants to heal.” These excuses–and that is exactly what they are: excuses–sound so good. Yet, they are all lies from the pit of hell. But worse than that, by believing these lies we are calling God a liar. This is blasphemy.

For me to say that healing is not for today is to say that God lied when He said He heals all of our diseases (Psalm 103: 3)

For me to say that God made me sick is to say that God lied when He said, “I am the Lord Who heals you” (Exodus 15: 26).

For me to say that I don’t have enough money to pay my bills is to say that God lied when He promised to give me the ability to produce wealth so that He can establish His covenant (Deuteronomy 8: 18).

The truth is this: If I do not receive my healing or my provision–or any other of God’s promises–the problem is not with God nor with His Word; the problem is with me. It is my responsibility, therefore, to find out what my problem is. Usually, it is unbelief. Sometimes it is a lack of knowledge (Hosea 6: 2). Always, the problem is on my end.

I know this is a hard pill to swallow, but it is the truth. And only the truth will set us free (John 8: 32).

You see, when God created man and woman, He called them to rule and reign over the earth. The Earth is our domain, and our domain is under our dominion. God made us stewards of the Earth, so the Earth is in our charge (Genesis 1: 28). Through the death and resurrection of Christ, God has given us everything we need to rule and reign in the Earth. In other words, He has given us the Keys to the Kingdom, and it is our job and our responsibility to enforce the laws of the Kingdom of God in the Earth. We do this by using the Keys of the Kingdom in faith. We do this by resisting and thwarting every attempt of Satan to remain an illegal squatter in the domain God has entrusted to our care and management.

By giving us the Keys of the Kingdom, our Lord has provided us with everything we will ever need to live out our destinies here in the earth. So, take the Keys of the Kingdom that Jesus has given you, and use them with all of the authority and power that backs you up as a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Now, it’s YOUR turn: Have you been using your circumstances to determine your theology? If so, are you willing to take God at His Word? Please leave your response in the Comment Box below. Thank you!

_______________________________________________________________

Welcome to Week 3 in our discussion on freedom!

Last week we learned that all of us who are born again have been given the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. We learned that the keys represent authority and power. This week we will explore how to use our keys to enforce God’s rule in the earth.

The Kingdom of God has a King. His name is Jesus Christ.  As King, Jesus rules over the entire universe and everything in it. Psalm 103: 19 says this: The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.  Moreover, God’s Kingdom is eternal, which means it will last forever. Daniel 4: 3 says this: His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion endures from generation to generation.

Many of us live in countries that are ruled by forms of government that do not have a king. Consequently, the concept of “kingdom” may be difficult for us to grasp, especially for those of us who live in a republic or a democracy, where the people have a large say in their governance. Not so in the Kingdom of God.

In the Kingdom of God, Jesus is the King, and those who are part of His Kingdom willingly and gladly obey Him. From this perspective, we see that the Kingdom of God has not only an external aspect (the entire universe), but also an internal one (the hearts of those who are born again). The Kingdom of God reigns in the hearts of those who love and follow Jesus. Jesus told us in John 18: 36 that His Kingdom is not of this world. By this He meant that His Kingdom is a spiritual kingdom that rules in the hearts of those who choose to be its citizens. We saw that one enters the Kingdom of God by being born again–that is, by repenting of one’s sins and accepting Christ as one’s Savior and Lord.

Because we are citizens of the Kingdom of God, we have been given an assignment to bring others into the Kingdom. Why? Because God loves everyone and does not want a single person to perish. This assignment is called the Great Commission and is described in Mark 16: 15-18:  “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

ornate vintage metal key on a white backgroundSince this assignment requires supernatural authority and power to over-rule the natural realm, Jesus gave us this supernatural authority and power so we could complete our assignments. This supernatural authority and supernatural power reside in the keys of the Kingdom.

So, how do we use those keys? To use the keys of the Kingdom effectively as born-again Christ-followers, we must first remember the following:

1-We do not fight FOR victory; we fight FROM victory. By His death and resurrection, Jesus earned the victory over Satan once and for all. The Word tells us in Ephesians 2: 6 that we are seated with Christ in heavenly realms and, therefore, share with Him His victory over Satan.

2-Satan is a DEFEATED foe. He has no power over us unless we give him power by believing his lies.

3-The keys of the Kingdom are designed to establish on earth what is ALREADY established in Heaven. This is the meaning of the words in the Lord’s Prayer: Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven. By using the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, we bring this Kingdom and God’s will into the earth.

Once we understand the above truths, we will use the keys of the Kingdom with confidence. How? We will boldly do what Jesus commanded us to do in the Great Commission.

  • We will preach the Gospel.
  • We will cast out demons.
  • We will be baptized in the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues.
  • We will not be harmed if we are attacked by a snake. (See Acts 28: 3-5 where Paul escaped harm after being bitten by a snake.)
  • We will not be hurt if we accidentally drink something poisonous.
  • We will lay hands on the sick, and they will be healed.

As we obey these commands of Christ, we will be enforcing His Kingdom in our sphere of influence; in other words, we will rule with Christ in our domain.

Next week, we will conclude our study on the Keys of the Kingdom by exploring some reasons that we Christ-Followers are not seeing more of Heaven’s blessings manifested in our lives but are still experiencing many of Satan’s curses, such as sickness, lack, and strife.

Now, it’s YOUR turn: Are you using the keys of the Kingdom that Jesus has given you? Are you enforcing the laws of the Kingdom in your assigned domain? If not, what is keeping you from doing so?

Freedom comes in many shapes and sizes. We talk about physical freedom, political freedom, financial freedom, emotional freedom, psychological freedom, and spiritual freedom. Some of these freedoms–like physical, financial, and political freedom–can be taken from us, but the freedom we have in Christ–spiritual, psychological, and emotional freedom–can never be taken from us.

One definition of “freedom” is this: the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved. In his 1828 Dictionary, Noah Webster defines freedom as follows: A state of exemption from the power or control of another.

For the next few weeks,I will be addressing the freedom we Christ-Followers have from the power and control of Satan. Knowing how to enforce this freedom is critical to living the abundant life that Jesus promised us. So, please don’t miss any of the blog posts in this very important series.

To begin, let’s take a look at where freedom starts:

Freedom is a choice. And that choice is a function of the will. We must first will or want to be free before we can ever be free.

Once we have made a choice to be free, then we must turn our attention to that place within us where we find the root of freedom: the human spirit.  When we are born into this world, our human spirit is separated from God. When we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior, we receive a new spirit that is now connected with God. This process is called being born again.

There can be no true and lasting freedom without being born again by receiving Jesus Christ into our lives. Christ is the origin of freedom. He is Truth, and He Himself has told us that only Truth will set us free (John 8: 32).

In order to be free, we must ask ourselves three questions:

1—Do I really want to be free? Would you believe that some people don’t want to be free? Instead, they want to be taken care of and willingly relinquish their freedom for unnecessary dependence–dependence that grows out of laziness or lack of awareness. We see this happening in our government every day.

2—How free do I want to be? The degree of freedom you attain is entirely up to you. Those who are the most free are those who desperately want to be free and go after freedom. The degree of your desire to be free is the chief indicator of how free you will be.

3–Am I willing to do what it takes to be free? You’ve most likely heard the statement that freedom isn’t free. This is a true statement. All freedom has a price attached to it. The greater the price paid, the greater the freedom earned or received. The ultimate price for freedom was the Blood of Jesus Christ. What price are you willing to pay to be free? Free in your spirit, free in your soul, free in your body, free in your finances?

Instant Access to Kingdom as a Key ConceptBecoming free is a major problem for most people. Perhaps you have been trying to get free of anger or addiction, of poverty or procrastination, of depression or despair. No matter what is standing in the way of your freedom, there is a way out.

In order to help you be free, Holy Spirit has instructed me to begin a weekly series on the Keys to the Kingdom of God. You see, we Christ-Followers live in a supernatural kingdom. This supernatural kingdom has laws by which it functions. Unless we unlock those laws, we will live earthly lives of continual struggle under the curse–in other words, of continual and increasing bondage. But as we learn to operate in the laws of God’s Kingdom, we will live under the blessing–in other words, of continual and increasing freedom.

In the weeks ahead, we will be taking a look at the Keys of the Kingdom that unlock the mysteries of the Laws of the Kingdom. We will learn how the Laws of the Kingdom operate. We will learn that the Laws of the Kingdom are directly opposite from the Laws of the World and usually don’t make sense to the natural mind. We will learn that only by living according to the Laws of God’s Kingdom will we experience true freedom and true life.

I look forward to having you join me on this journey. Please tell your family and friends about this blog series and please pass this post on to them. Thank you!

And remember this: You will be as free as you choose to be.

Now, it’s YOUR turn: Are you aware that there are laws that govern the Kingdom of God? If so, please share how operating in one or more of those laws has changed your life. Please leave a comment in the box below.
