PODCAST: “How to Handle Pressure” by Dr. MaryAnn Diorio

One Brave Roman soldier in field. Photo.Have you noticed that pressure is increasing in your life? Are you finding it more and more difficult to handle the pressure as it bombards you from all sides? If so, take heart. There are certain things you can do to subdue the pressure, put it under your feet, and keep it there.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines pressure as “the weight or force that is produced when something presses or pushes against something else.” While pressure is most often used to indicate a physical force, it can be used as well to indicate a spiritual force. In this discussion, we will use pressure to mean those demonic forces from hell that daily threaten to discourage, depress, and destroy the members of the Body of Christ.

We read in the Book of Ephesians that we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”  Some translations use the word “wrestle” to indicate the type of spiritual battle in which we are engaged.

Wrestling involves hand-to-hand combat; indeed, body-to-body contact. In other words, it involves the whole person against the enemy.  The battle can often be vicious, and the fight sustained for long periods of time.

So, how do we handle this unrelenting pressure from the enemy? Our Lord has given us the weapons for not only engaging the enemy but also for conquering him. These weapons comprise the whole armor of God. Let’s take a look at each one.

1-The Belt of Truth. A Roman soldier’s belt held together the rest of his armorIn like manner, truth will hold together the rest of our spiritual armor as we fight the enemy. We must put on truth and walk in it in all of our dealings with God and man. Deception is rampant in our world today. Lying has become second-nature to many people. But the Follower of Christ must dealy truly and truthfully in every situation.

2-The Breastplate of Righteousness. The breastplate protected the Roman soldier from attacks against his vital organs, including his heart. Righteousness means right-standing with God. As born-again believers, we are protected from the enemy by the righteousness of Christ which we received when we accepted Him as Savior.

3-The Shoes of Peace. A Roman soldier wore special shoes that protected his feet from dangerous terrain, enabling him to step freely wherever he needed to step and to stand firm while engaging in battle. The shoes of the gospel of peace enable us to tread safely and to stand firm in the worst of situations.

4-The Shield of Faith.
The Roman soldier used his shield to ward off the fiery darts of the enemy. So do we use our Shield of Faith to ward off Satan’s fiery darts of doubt, unbelief, fear, strife, and every other fiery dart.

5-The Helmet of Salvation.
Just as a helmet protected the Roman soldier from injury to his head, so does the Helmet of Salvation protect us from injury to our thinking. Our salvation enables us to abide in Christ, and abiding in Christ will eventually transform our way of thinking into God’s way of thinking.

6-The Sword of the Spirit.  While all of the other pieces of our armor are defensive, the Sword of the Spirit is used in taking the offense. As the enemy attacks us with his lies, we retaliate by piercing him with the truth of God’s Word.

So, there you have it!  Six pieces of armor that will enable you not only to resist the pressure that comes against you but also to subdue it. Now, take up your armor and win!

double-for-your-trouble2Are you tired of the enemy’s attacks? Do you feel as though you barely get up from one assault and another one hits you before you are fully standing? Do you desperately need some R & R?

If you nodded your head at one or all of these questions, you are in good company. The Body of Christ throughout the world has been assaulted with the enemy’s right hooks and left hooks, one after another, without relenting. His goal is to knock you down so that you will not fulfill your destiny.

But, before you collapse in defeat, let me encourage you. The LORD promises to give you double for your trouble. The LORD promises to restore to you what Satan has stolen from you.

The LORD promises to render justice on your behalf!

One of my favorite Scripture verses is Zephaniah 9: 12: “Even today I declare that I will restore double to you.” For every blessing the enemy has stolen from you, God will restore it two-fold. Hallelujah!

God says what He means and means what He says. You can stake your very life on His Word to you: The LORD will give you double for your trouble!

So, is there anything we need to do to receive double for our trouble? Yes. Here are some actions we need to take:

1 -Be forgiving. Our trouble has usually come from someone’s wrong actions toward us. God wants us to forgive those who have hurt us. When we forgive, we open the door for God to restore what the enemy stole from us. When we do not forgive, the door of God’s blessing remains closed.

2 – Be patient. God’s ways are not our ways. He works out our situations according to His purpose and in His timing. While we do not know when God will give us double for our trouble, we can trust that He definitely will.

3 – Be thankful. Thank God for His justice. Satan will not get away with stealing from us. At the same time, pray for God’s mercy upon the people who allowed Satan to work through them to hurt you.

4 – Be expectant. Expect God to make good on His promise to give you double for your trouble. You may be surprised at the way by which He restores to you what the enemy has stolen from you.

As I look back on my own life, I can vouch for the fact that God has given me double for my trouble many times over. And He will do the same for you.

Meditate on these promises of our great God, and rejoice in His goodness toward you:

Joel 2: 25 NLT: “The LORD says, ‘I will give you back what you lost to the swarming locusts, the hopping locusts, the stripping locusts, and the cutting locusts.'”

Isaiah 61: 7 MSG:  “Because you got a double dose of trouble and more than your share of contempt, Your inheritance in the land will be doubled and your joy go on forever.”

Now, it’s YOUR turn: Have you been repeatedly knocked down by the enemy?  How have you handled his attacks? Are you expecting “double for your trouble”? Please leave a comment in the box below.

How to Engage in Spiritual Warfare

Knowing Your Enemy

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
______________________________________

People often ask me why there is evil in the world. The answer is simple. There is evil in the world because there is a devil who is the god of this world. His name is Satan, and his single purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy you in any way he can.

Most people don’t like to talk about the devil. In fact, many people deny he even exists. But when we don’t know our enemy, and when we don’t know his tactics, we place ourselves in grave danger, not only spiritually, but also physically, mentally, and emotionally.

One Brave Roman soldier in field. Photo.

Scripture tells us that we are in a spiritual battle: For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places (Ephesians 6:12). In order to fight this spiritual battle, we have been given spiritual weapons: For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4). Only by using these spiritual weapons will be we able to defeat the enemy.

What are some of these “weapons of our warfare?” We find these weapons listed in Ephesians 10: 18.  Let’s take a look:

1) The Belt of Truth. Scripture tells us in John 8:32 that the truth will set us free. So the first piece of armor that we need to don is Truth. Truth is a Person. Truth is Jesus Christ. The Word of God is Truth. As we saturate our spirits with the Word of God, we will be putting on the Belt of Truth to wrestle the enemy.

2) The Breastplate of Righteousness. In Roman times, soldiers wore a breastplate to protect their vital organs in the midst of battle. The Christian’s protection is the breastplate of righteousness. This weapon places us in Christ and places Christ in us. We are His righteousness because of His grace.

3) The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace.  Shoes are worn by the feet, and the feet are the foundation of our bodies. When peace is the foundation of our lives, we stand on a strong foundation. Jesus is our Peace. He is the Prince of Peace. His Gospel is a Gospel of Peace. What does this mean? It means that Jesus came to restore peace between man and the Father. We are bearers of that peace as we go about our daily lives.

4) The Shield of Faith.  Why do we need the shield of faith? Because the enemy continually throws fiery darts aimed to take us down. When we carry the shield of faith, we are prepared to deflect those fiery darts and send them back where they came from. How do we get the shield of faith? By hearing the Word of God. Romans 10:17 says this: Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Whatever you hear often enough, you will eventually believe. Make sure you are hearing the Word of God and not the word of the world.

5) The Helmet of Salvation. A helmet is worn to protect the head. The helmet of salvation protects the mind from demonic assault in the form of lies, false doctrines, and false philosophies. When we wear the Helmet of Salvation, we are protecting ourselves from false belief systems whose goal is to bring us down.

6) The Sword of the Spirit. This last weapon is the only weapon that puts us on the offense. All of the other weapons are defensive weapons. The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. With it, we charge against the enemy and drive him out of our lives. We wield the Sword of the Spirit by speaking God’s Word into every situation that opposes His promises to us. For example, when sickness attacks, we use the Sword of the Spirit to drive it away.

Unless we put on all of the pieces of our God-given armor, we risk injury from the enemy. So be sure that when you get dressed each morning, the first thing you put on is the whole armor of God.
