When Being Tongue-Tied Is a Good Thing

Tips for Controlling Your Tongue

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
______________________________________

All of my life, I’ve struggled with controlling my tongue.  Coming from a family of very expressive Italians, I’ve tripped over my tongue so many times I can’t even count them. Along the way, I’ve learned a few tips for tying my tongue, aka thinking before I speak.  Allow me to share them with you.

Man with hand on mouth

1–Thoughts precede words. Every spoken word first was a thought. Perhaps not a conscious thought, but a thought, nonetheless. So, to control your tongue, you first have to control your thoughts.

2–You have control over your thoughts. What you think is up to you. Before I came to Christ, I did not know this. Learning this truth revolutionized my life. In Philippians 4:8, our LORD commands us to think good thoughts.  If He commands us to do something, He gives us the power to do it.

3–Your tongue controls your life. Like a bit in a horse’s mouth, the tongue directs the course of your life (James 3:6). If you want a good life, learn to control your tongue. How? By allowing Christ to speak through your tongue. When you are tempted to say something contrary to God’s Word, turn to Jesus within you and ask Him to speak words of life through your tongue.

How to Create the Life You Want

Framing Your Future with Your Thoughts

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23

The key to your future–whether successful or not–is your thinking.

The thoughts you think lead you to success or to failure. Your thoughts literally frame your future.

The good news is that you have the power to choose your thoughts. Choose only those thoughts that reflect what you want your future to look like.

Choose thoughts of life, not death! (Deuteronomy 30:19).

Taking Thoughts Captive

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
_____________________________________________

Are you feeling defeated and beaten down? Do you often wonder if things will ever change in your life—if you’ll ever climb out of debt, or ever recover your health, or ever have a happy marriage? If you identify with any of these situations—or a similar one—take heart. You can turn your situation around by changing your way of thinking.

Consider this. The Word of God says that as a man thinks in his heart, so is he (Proverbs 23:7). This means that our thoughts will determine the outcome of our lives. Look at your present situation in life. Is it what you would like it to be? Now look at your thoughts. What have you been thinking about your situation?

Let’s take, for example, your financial situation. Perhaps you’re struggling to make ends meet. If so, what are you thinking about your finances? Are you thinking thoughts like the following: “We’re headed toward bankruptcy,” or “We can’t afford to send our children to college,” or “We’ll never get out of debt”? If this is what you’re thinking, then your bad situation will never change. Why? Because your thoughts are seeds from which your destiny grows. It follows, therefore, that if you’re planting failure thought seeds into your life, you’ll reap a life of failure. The converse is also true. If you plant success thought seeds into your life, you’ll reap a life of success.

“All well and good,” you may be saying. But let’s get practical. How do I plant success thought seeds?

The first step is to learn the difference between a success thought and a failure thought. Simply put, a success thought is a thought that lines up with God’s Word and a failure thought is one that does not. That makes knowing God’s Word pretty important, doesn’t it? How else can we know what lines up with His Word and what doesn’t if we don’t know His Word? God’s Word is the standard—the plumb line—against which we measure the “straightness” of our thinking.

The next step in planting success thought seeds is to become aware of what you’re thinking. At first, this may seem difficult to do because our minds are so accustomed to going their own way. But in order for us to lead successful, overcoming lives, we must pay attention to what we’re thinking, and we must do this all of the time. Only in this way will we be able to recognize whether or not our thoughts agree with God’s thoughts as found in His Word.

The third step in planting success thought seeds is to capture every thought and bring it to Jesus. In Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, chapter 10, verse 5, we find our Lord’s command to bring “every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” This means that every thought we think must be captured and presented to Christ to be examined in the light of His Word. If it does not agree with God’s Word—in other words, if it is a failure thought seed—then it must not be planted in the soil of our mind. If it does agree with God’s Word—in other words, if it is a success thought seed–then it can and should be planted in the soil of our mind.

Remember: Your thoughts are the seeds that determine the course of your life. If you want a good life, plant good thoughts, because as you think in your heart, so you will be.

Questions: 1) What thoughts do you need to take captive? 2) What will you do to monitor your thoughts?  You may leave a comment by clicking here. To receive these blog posts in your emailbox, please click here.
