Recently, my husband and I were discussing the topic of confidentiality and our experiences with people whom we thought we could trust but who turned out to be untrustworthy. Sad to say–in my experience, at least–I’ve dealt with people who have betrayed a confidence and broadcast it in repeated episodes of gossip. My husband brilliantly called the practice of confiding in a gossip “confiding in a megaphone.”  Hence, the title of this blog post.

Scripture is replete with verses on the seriousness of gossip. Here are some of them:

___Exodus 23: 1 – “You must not pass along false rumors.

___James 4: 11 – “…do not slander one another.”

___Proverbs 11: 13 – “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.”

___Proverbs 16: 28 – “…a gossip separates close friends.”

___Proverbs 20: 19 – “A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid anyone who talks too much.”

To gossip is to steal the good reputation of another. It is a form of murder and has wide-range ramifications. Perhaps you’ve heard the Jewish story called “The Tale of the Feathers.” If not, you can find it here.  It is a stunning example of the damage that gossip can do.

The next time you are tempted to gossip, ask yourself how you would feel if someone were to gossip about you. Decide today that you will not be a megaphone. Instead, you will be a true and trustworthy friend.

My Prayer for You Today: Lord Jesus, I ask that You would give my brother and sister discernment to know in whom they should confide and in whom they should not. I also ask that you would help us all to remember that trust is the foundation of friendship and that once trust is broken, it is virtually impossible to re-establish. So, make us trustworthy people who will keep a confidence when asked to do so. In Your precious Name I pray. Amen.

Now, it’s YOUR turn: Have you ever been betrayed by a gossip? If so, how did you handle the betrayal? Please share your insights in the Comments box below. Thank you!

Whenever my grandchildren scratch a knee or a finger, they run to their Mama for comfort. She kisses the boo-boo, prays for healing, and then bids them go play!

As I recently watched one of these scenarios transpire in my kitchen, Holy Spirit spoke to me. “When you come to me with a problem, do you pray and then go play? Or do you pray and then go fret?”

The Lord’s words brought me under conviction. Too often, I pray and then go fret. Too often, I continue to carry the burden I thought I’d laid at the Lord’s feet.

Too often, I worry.

Worry is a sin. When I worry, I am not trusting God. When I worry, I am not acting in faith. When I worry, I am moving in fear.

What about you? Do you pray and then go fret? Or do you pray and then go play?

Play symbolizes freedom from worry. Play symbolizes peace and rest.

Play symbolizes faith.

Not long ago, Holy Spirit awakened me with this Scripture verse: “The servant of the Lord must not strive” (2 Timothy 2: 24). To strive is another way of saying to worry, to take matters into my own hands, to try to fix things on my own. Truth be told, I can’t fix a thing without God’s help, especially the big problems of life. In every case, I need His wisdom, His discernment, and His guidance.

In every case, I need to pray, and then go play.

Since observing the “kiss-the-boo-boo” scenario in my kitchen, I’ve chosen to switch gears. From now on, when I run to God with a problem, I will leave it there, trusting Him to take care of it. He is bigger than I am, and He can certainly handle the worst of problems.

And then, I will do what He says. “Pray, then go play!”

Now it’s your turn!  What will you choose to do with your burdens?  Will you choose to pray and then go play? Please post your comment in the box below. Thanks!

Five Ingredients of Great Relationships

by Dr. MaryAnn Diorio

WINNING WITH THE WORD

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
______________________________________

Like all things that pertain to health, relationships require care.  Here are five tips for keeping your relationships strong:

1–LOVE. This means treating the other person in the relationship with respect, dignity, and encouragement. Love is the foundation of all good relationships.

2–COMMUNICATION. We communicate to understand. Understanding paves the way for trust.

3–TRUST. Trust is the glue that keeps a relationship strong. Trust must be earned.

4–FORGIVENESS. We all mess up. Forgiveness sets the stage for rebuilding a relationship.

5–TIME. Growth takes time. For a relationship to grow, you must invest time in it.

How to Eliminate Fear from Your Life

A Simple Technique

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
______________________________________

Fear has its roots in a lie. The lie is that we cannot trust God.

God is Love, but fear does not trust Love because fear does not know Love.

To eliminate fear from your life, get to know Love. Get to know God.

The more you know God, the more you will trust Him.

The more you trust Him, the less fear you will experience in your life.

It’s as simple and profound as that.

(Business) Blogging for Business

Oblogf all the marketing tools available to the fiction writer, blogging is one of the most effective. But to maximize your blog’s effectiveness for building sales, you need to keep some important points in mind:

1) Know what you are talking about.  Blog readers expect expertise. Give your readers cutting-edge information on your topic. Take the time to keep abreast of industry news and industry practices. As the old saying goes, “content is king” when it comes to blogging.

2) Cultivate trust and credibility. One of the best ways to do this is by following Tip #1 above. When you consistently give readers information that helps them succeed, they will keep coming back to your blog.

3) Develop a community of readers that interacts with one another.  Seth Godin calls this community of readers your tribe. Your tribe will be an outgrowth of tips #1 and #2. When you inspire the trust of those who read your blog because you provide great content, those readers will turn into your followers. They will follow not only your blog, but also your Facebook page, your Twitter account, and other social media venues.  Eventually, many of these followers will become your customers.

Blogging offers many other advantages to the fiction writer. Start by focusing on these three. They will take you far on your journey toward building your fiction-writing business.
