Hello and Happy Day! This is Dr. MaryAnn Diorio, Novelist and Life Coach, welcoming you to another episode of Winning with the Word. Today is Monday, August 24, 2020. Today’s Podcast is Episode #33 in Series 2020 and is titled “Who Are You Really?”

_______________________________________________

We hear a lot of talk these days about self-image, self-esteem, and self-fulfillment.

All of this discussion has as its goal discovering who we really are. While discovering our true identity is crucial, most of us are going about it the wrong way. We are looking in the wrong place to discover who we really are. We are looking to ourselves.

Let’s take a deeper look. Have you noticed that all of these phrases–self-image, self-esteem, self-fulfillment–include the word “self”? It seems as though the entire goal of life is to find ourselves. We think that in finding ourselves, we will ultimately find the meaning of life and our purpose in life.

But is this really true? Is it really true that when we find ourselves, we will discover who we really are? That we will discover the meaning of life and our life purpose?

The answer to this question lies in God’s Holy Word. What does God say about finding ourselves? In Matthew 10: 39, God says this about our search for ourselves:  “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

Hmm. Now that’s the exact opposite of what the world has taught us, isn’t it? The world has taught us that we need to find ourselves in order to discover the meaning of life. God says that if we focus on finding ourselves to discover the meaning of life, we will eventually not only lose ourselves, but we will also miss the meaning of life. On the other hand, if we focus on finding God, we will find ourselves and the true meaning of our lives.

Why does finding ourselves depend on finding God? Because God is our Maker.

To expect the self to know the purpose for which it was made is like asking a car to know the purpose for which it was made. The car is incapable of knowing its own purpose. Only the maker of the car can tell us the purpose for which the car exists.

Likewise, the self is incapable of knowing its own purpose. Only the Maker of the self can tell the self the purpose for which the self exists.

While this may be a weak analogy, I think you get my point.

You see, my friend, we were made in God’s image. Precisely for that reason, our true identity lies only in Him.  if we ignore or deny that truth, we will miss the very meaning of our lives.

The world’s emphasis on the self takes our eyes off the true source of our identity, and that source is God Himself. When we look to ourselves to define ourselves, we will be deceived and go astray. We will lose our bearings.

But when we look to God to define us, we will discover who we really are.

To seek our identity outside of this truth is to end up with a false image of who we truly are. Yet, this is exactly what Satan tempts us to do.

Liar that he is, Satan tempts us to believe that we can know ourselves by ourselves. He tempts us to isolate ourselves from our Maker.

But isolation leads to desolation. And that is precisely the goal of the enemy. The Bible says he comes only “to steal, kill, and destroy.”

“Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 10: 39)

There is only one way that you can discover who you really are. That way is through Jesus Christ. He Himself said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”  So, if you want the truth about who you really are, follow Jesus. Only in Him will you discover your true identity.

Let me ask you: Have you been looking to Jesus Christ for your identity? Or have you been looking to yourself? If you have not sought your identity in Christ, repent and begin to do so now by accepting Him as your Savior and Lord. Pray this simple prayer with me:

Lord Jesus, I’ve been looking to myself to discover who I am. No wonder I’ve been going around in circles. Only You can tell me who I really am because You made me. So, I come to You now and invite You into my life. Reveal to me who I am. But most of all, reveal to me Who You are, for it is only by knowing You that I will begin to know myself. In Your Name I pray. Amen.

If you prayed this simple prayer, please write to me at drmaryann@maryanndiorio.com. I would like to send you a little booklet that will help you get started in your walk with Christ. I also encourage you to get yourself a Bible and read it every single day. The Bible is God’s love letter to you, His manual for your life. In the Bible, God reveals Who He is, and He instructs you how to live.

Finally, ask the Lord to lead you to the church of His choice for you where you can learn about Him and have fellowship and encouragement with other Christ-Followers.

A new heresy has infiltrated the Church. I call it “outcome-based theology.”

What is outcome-based theology?

Simply put, it is a false theological position that states that the truth of Scripture depends on the results we get when we pray.

For example, if I pray for healing and I don’t get healed, then something is wrong with the Bible. Perhaps healing is not for today. Perhaps God doesn’t want everyone to be healed. Perhaps God has specific qualifications for healing.

Perhaps. Perhaps. Perhaps.

Outcome-based theology is but another instance of Satan’s original question to Eve: Did God really say? (Genesis 3: 1).

Well, yes! God DID really say!  And we would do well to take at face value what He said and believe it!

For instance, God said this about healing:

___”By the stripes of Jesus you were healed” (1 Peter 2: 24).  WERE healed. We are ALREADY healed!

___”Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases….” (Psalm 103: 2-3).  ALL our diseases. Not SOME, but ALL!

___”As the sun went down that evening, people throughout the village brought sick family members to Jesus. No matter what their diseases were, the touch of his hand healed every one” (Luke 4: 40).  Jesus healed EVERY ONE!

God says what He means and means what He says. If we are not receiving what God has already given us through Christ, then the problem is on our end, not His!

If we are not experiencing the blessings God promised us in the Atonement, then we need to ask Holy Spirit to reveal to us the true reason. Maybe it has to do with a lack of knowledge (Hosea 4: 6). Maybe it has to do with a misunderstanding we have of a particular Bible verse. Worst of all, maybe it has to do with our doubt and unbelief.

“God is not a man, so he does not lie” (Numbers 23: 19).  He says what He means and means what He says. It is high time we believe Him.

Outcome-based theology makes man the final authority for Scriptural truth. It exalts man’s reason over God’s Word.

In short, outcome-based theology makes man God.

Outcome-based theology is the result of false teaching. I urge you to examine everything you hear from the pulpit, everything you hear on TV or the radio, and everything you read. Measure it by the Word of God. If it does not agree with God’s Word, it is a lie.

Remember this truth: God’s Word is our final authority, no matter what we feel or think, and no matter what anyone else feels or thinks or says.

Prayer for Today: Lord God, keep us from the deception of outcome-based theology. Keep us from all deception. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.

Now, it’s YOUR turn: Are you guilty of outcome-based theology? If so, repent and believe God. Please share your insights in the Comments box below. Thank you!

Shortly after I became a Christian at the age of 25, I shared my born again experience with my best friend, my closest friend since the fifth grade.  Surely, I thought, she would be eager to know more about what had happened to me.

Imagine my shock when, instead of interest, she severed all contact with me. Sadly, to this day, 47 years later, she still refuses to respond to my many attempts at communication.

Yet, my best friend was not the only friend I lost when I became a Christian. One of my best college friends, a good friend of four years, responded as follows to a letter I had written her about my born again experience (I paraphrase):  “Don’t you ever write to me again about being born again and about Jesus Christ!” Another shocking experience for me.

Yet, had I known God’s Word better at the time, I would not have been at all surprised at the responses of both of my friends. Our Lord warns us that we will suffer as Christians. We will be persecuted, whether in word or in deed. There is a price to pay for bearing the Name of Jesus Christ. Yet, the price I paid is nothing compared to those of our brothers and sisters around the world who have given their very lives for Christ.

As the days grow darker, persecution against Christians will increase. Are you prepared to be persecuted for Christ? If you stand up for Him, it is not a question of “if” but of “when” you will be persecuted. You may not be required to give your life for Jesus, but if you were, would you gladly do so?

Many of our brothers and sisters in Christ over the centuries have died for Christ. Many are dying even as I write. In fact, it is estimated that the number of Christians being martyred today is greater than at any other time in human history.

If we are true followers of Jesus Christ, we will be ready to pay the price for following Him, no matter what that price may be.

I continue to pray for my friends, hoping that one day they will see the truth and accept Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.  Meanwhile, I praise God for the great privilege of bearing His Name. I trust you do as well.

Now, it’s YOUR turn:  Have you been persecuted for bearing the Name of Christ?  Please leave a comment in the box below.
