Are Your Dreams Talking to You?

Why It’s Important to Pay Attention to Your Dreams

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23

If you’re like most people, you occasionally dream while asleep.  Maybe you dream frequently. Whichever the case, do you ascribe your dreams only to last night’s pizza? Or do you consider that your dreams may be far more than that?

Hot Pizza

Dreams are the language of the heart. The dreams we dream at night are usually God’s way of speaking to us. While God can speak to us in many ways, He often uses dreams because our minds are at rest and not distracted while we sleep.

Throughout the Bible, we find example after example of God speaking to people through their dreams. When a dream occurs during sleep, it is called, simply, a dream. When a dream occurs during waking hours, it is called a vision or a trance (Numbers 24:4).

Here are a few instances of Biblical dreams or visions in which God spoke to people:

  • In a vision God gave the Abrahamic Covenant to Abram.
  • In a dream God foretold of the way Joseph of the many-colored coat would help his family during a time of great famine.
  • In a dream God spoke to Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, to take Mary and the Christ Child to Egypt to escape King Herod’s wrath.
  • In a vision, God gave the Apostle John the entire Book of Revelation.

Many other examples of dreams and visions occur in the Bible. But God also speaks to His people today in dreams and visions. So, it is vitally important that you pay attention to your dreams.

I keep a notebook by my bedside to record my dreams upon awakening. If you don’t write down your dreams, you will most likely forget them. Note the date of your dream, the time you awaken, the feelings you are feeling, and the color of your dream. Was it in full color, black and white, or muted. Note also the people in your dream and their names.

The symbols in your dreams will reflect what is going on in your heart, for dreams are the language of the heart. If you do not understand the meaning of your dream, ask Holy Spirit to reveal it to you. He may do so right away or over time. Continue to pray until you know what your dream means.

Dreams are given to us by God to encourage us, comfort us, warn us, and advise us. So pay close attention to your dreams. Like the people in the Bible, you may just avoid a serious mistake or prevent a serious problem by paying close attention to your dreams.

Are Your Dreams Telling You Something?

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
________________________________________

Dreams are the stuff of life. And I’m not talking about dreams in the sense of goals and aspirations. While such dreams are, indeed, the stuff of life, there is another kind of dream that is even more the stuff of life. This kind of dream is the dream you dream while you are asleep.

Most people dream during their sleep. But most people don’t pay attention to their dreams. Most people think that a dream is the result of last night’s pizza. But I would strongly urge you to pay attention to your dreams. Why? Because dreams are one of the chief ways God speaks to us.

Consider these instances where dreams changed the course of history:

  • Joseph of the Many-Colored Coat dreamed dreams that saved the nation of Israel and his family from severe famine.
  • Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, was warned in a dream to flee for the safety of the Child Jesus and his mother Mary.
  • The Magi were warned in a dream not to return to Herod but to go home another way.
  • John the Revelator wrote the Apocalypse as a result of a dream.

The Bible says this about dreams: “‘In the last days,’ God said, ‘I will pour out my Holy Spirit upon all mankind, and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men dream dreams” (Acts 2:17).  We are living in these last days. Many followers of Yeshua are dreaming dreams of great meaning for their personal lives and for the life of the Body of Christ in general. I myself have dreamed such dreams.

So, pay attention to your dreams. God may be saying something to you that is of great import to yourself, to your family,or to the Church at-large.

One last thing: the language of dreams is symbolism. In other words, what you see in your dreams usually has a symbolic, not a literal, meaning. Ask Holy Spirit to show you what your dream means. He may do so right away or over time, so be patient.

You will discover a whole new aspect of intimacy with God through the dreams He gives you. So, respect them and pay attention to them.

Is It Just Your Imagination?

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
_____________________________________________

The imagination is a faculty of the human spirit.  Together with the conscience and the intuition, it comprises the three parts of the human spirit just as the intellect, the emotions, and the will comprise the three parts of the human soul.

For too long, the imagination has been discounted, disrespected, and demeaned by a culture in which reason has been elevated to godhood. Yet, our Lord speaks to us through the imagination more than we realize.

The word “imagination” comes from the Latin word “imaginare” which means “to form an image of.”  When we imagine, we form images of things that do not yet exist in the physical realm or that exist only in potentiality (See Hebrews 11:1).  Everything we see around us was once an image in someone’s imagination. The imagination is essential to every creation, every invention.  Nothing exists without its first having been imagined. Every story I write is first a series of images or scenes in my mind. From this we can conclude that images or pictures are the language of the spirit.

Since we communicate with God spirit to Spirit (John 4:24), we communicate with Him in images. For example, when God speaks to us in dreams, He uses images (symbols) to get His message across.

So, what is my point? My point is that when an idea pops into your head that seems outlandish, don’t discard it as being “just your imagination.” Instead, treat that idea with the highest respect. Pay close attention to it. God may be speaking to you through your imagination.

When pictures form in your mind about what can be, don’t let anyone tell you you are only day-dreaming. Respect those day-dreams. They may be God’s answer to your heart’s deepest prayer.

When a little child says he is afraid because he has seen a monster in his room, don’t tell him it was only his imagination. A child’s imagination has not yet been stifled by rationalism. He may have truly seen a demon. So, don’t invalidate his experience. Teach him, instead, how to send demons packing in the Name of Jesus.

Much more can be said on this fascinating subject. For now, just remember to respect your imagination. It is a great gift for developing intimacy with God the Father through Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Questions: 1) Do you respect your imagination?  2) If not, why not? 3) Have you had ideas that you considered foolish? 4) Could it be that God was speaking to you through those ideas? You may leave a comment by clicking here. To receive these blog posts in your emailbox, please click here.
