(Attitude) The Audience of One

stressEverywhere I turn, I see us writers frenetically promoting, promoting, promoting. I am often amazed that we ever find time to write. While we must certainly address the business side of promoting our writing, at times I wonder if we are overdoing it or handling it all wrong.

Please allow me to offer a few thoughts on the topic:

1) Scripture tells us that promotion comes from the Lord (Psalm 75:6-7). No matter how much we may strive to promote ourselves, we will fall flat on our faces if God is not in it.

2) Scripture tells us that unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it (Psalm 127:1).  No matter what fancy strategies we use to promote ourselves and our books, we will fall flat on our faces if God is not in it.

3) Scripture tells us that pride comes before a fall (Proverbs 16:18).  No matter how great our books are or how sleek our marketing campaign is, if we are not doing all in obedience to God and for His glory, we will fall flat on our faces.

Our purpose as writers on this earth is to exalt Jesus Christ, not ourselves. Our purpose as writers on this earth is to glorify God in all that we write and in all that pertains to our writing. Our purpose as writers on this earth is, ultimately, to please one Person only, the greatest of all Authors–our God in the Persons of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Will you join me today in taking stock of your writing life? I don’t know about you, but I need to do some repenting.
