How to Win at the Game of Life

by Dr. MaryAnn Diorio

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23

Life has been called a game. A game has winners and losers. Games can be played over and over, but life cannot. So, since we have only one chance at this game called life, how can we be sure we win the game?

Interestingly, the Bible provides solid, surefire instructions for how to win at the game called Life. Here are a few of them:

winner icon design, vector illustration eps10 graphic1-Let love be your greatest aim (1 Corinthians 14: 1). God is love, and we are the most like Him when we love. To love means to treat others as we want to be treated. It does not mean to condone sin. True love always loves the sinner but hates the sin. Love puts the good of the loved one above one’s own needs and desires. Love never fails.

2-Always speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4: 15). Truth and love are two sides of the same coin.  If we say we love but do not speak the truth to the one we love, then we really do not love that person. To love without truth is not to love at all. To speak the truth without love is to be nothing more than a clanging cymbal.

3-Trust in the Lord more than you trust in yourself (Proverbs 3: 5). The Lord knows the beginning from the end. He sees the entire picture. We do not. So it makes sense to trust God more than we trust ourselves.

4-Practice contentment no matter the situation (Philippians 4: 11). We all go through good times and bad. One way to win at life is to be content no matter in what situation we find ourselves. Contentment fosters peace, and peace contributes to our wholeness.

5-Develop an attitude of gratitude (1 Thessalonians 5: 18). It’s not the problems we face in life that get us down; it’s how we perceive those problems. When we give thanks in the midst of every trial – not FOR every trial, but IN THE MIDST OF every trial – we assume a winning posture in life. To complain is to act like a victim. To give thanks is to act like a victor.

If you apply these five simple strategies to the way you live, you will find yourself winning instead of losing at this wonderful game called Life.

NOW IT’S YOUR TURN: What Scriptural principles have you applied to win at the game of life? Please share your thoughts in the box below. We value them!

How to Empower Your Life for Blessings

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
______________________________________

Human tongue protruding out. Child tongue.

Your tongue programs your heart.

Your heart determines your life.

Scripture tells us that the mouth speaks what is in the heart (Luke 6:45). If you want to know what is in your heart, listen to what you say.

If you do not like what is coming out of your heart through your mouth, then change what you speak.  It is a cycle: heart / tongue / heart / tongue / heart /tongue. The cycle starts with the heart but is broken with the tongue.

Your tongue is the programmer of your life (James 3:1-9). Give it words that will set the course of your life for the blessing, not the curse.

When Being Tongue-Tied Is a Good Thing

Tips for Controlling Your Tongue

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
______________________________________

All of my life, I’ve struggled with controlling my tongue.  Coming from a family of very expressive Italians, I’ve tripped over my tongue so many times I can’t even count them. Along the way, I’ve learned a few tips for tying my tongue, aka thinking before I speak.  Allow me to share them with you.

Man with hand on mouth

1–Thoughts precede words. Every spoken word first was a thought. Perhaps not a conscious thought, but a thought, nonetheless. So, to control your tongue, you first have to control your thoughts.

2–You have control over your thoughts. What you think is up to you. Before I came to Christ, I did not know this. Learning this truth revolutionized my life. In Philippians 4:8, our LORD commands us to think good thoughts.  If He commands us to do something, He gives us the power to do it.

3–Your tongue controls your life. Like a bit in a horse’s mouth, the tongue directs the course of your life (James 3:6). If you want a good life, learn to control your tongue. How? By allowing Christ to speak through your tongue. When you are tempted to say something contrary to God’s Word, turn to Jesus within you and ask Him to speak words of life through your tongue.

How to Be Free

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23

Freedom is first and foremost an inside job.

Chain breaking

To be free requires knowing and applying truth to our lives. The critical question then becomes, “What is truth?”

Jesus said, “I am the . . . Truth” (John 14:6).  To know Jesus Christ is to know Truth.

When you know Jesus, aka Truth, and receive Him into your life, you will be free.

When you know truth, aka Jesus, and apply it to your life, you will be free.

Bondage results from adherence to a lie. What lies are keeping you in bondage?

Freedom results from adherence to truth. “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).

If you want to be free, get to know Jesus Christ.

The Bean of Life

No Substitute for the Water of Life

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
_______________________________________

My husband calls the coffee bean “the bean of life.” Every morning, he sees to it that I have a cup of that bean in liquid form. As I take the first sip, I have to agree with my husband’s assessment.

That first sip of morning coffee rings, sings, and zings. 🙂  As it rushes through my veins, the residue of sleep fog in my brain suddenly vanishes, and I am imbued with physical and mental energy. I am ready to face the day.

While the coffee bean may ignite “life” in the physical body, there is another beverage that will ignite life in the spirit. This spiritual beverage is called “Living Water.” It comes from the Well of the Holy Spirit that is found only in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

One day, Jesus stopped at a well in Samaria. Jews were forbidden to interact with Samaritans, but, as usual, Jesus superseded man-made laws with a higher law, the Law of Love.

A woman came to the well, and Jesus engaged her.  Here is their conversation found in John 4: 4-15:

“Now he [Jesus] had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

A spring of water welling up to eternal life! What wonderful news!  Jesus wants to give you living water that will awaken your spirit!

The Living Water of Christ is available to all who are thirsty for it. And, once they drink of it, they will never thirst again!

Are you thirsty today? Do you need a drink of the Living Water of Christ? If so, it is yours for the asking. Just go to Jesus and tell Him you are thirsty for His Living Water. Then drink deeply, until you are satisfied. And go back for more when you are thirsty again. The Living Well will never run dry.

And now, in honor of my husband, I will close with a humorous poem he wrote about my morning cup of the liquid “Bean of Life”:

The Bean of Life
by Dominic Diorio

I’ve been beckoned by the Bean of Life.
I feel compelled to go.
For I must fetch for my Beloved,
Her morning Cup of Joe!

Who knows? My knight in shining armor of 45 years may be the next poet laureate! 🙂
