Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?

Attitudes That Keep You from Success

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23

Are you your own worst enemy?  Are your thinking patterns such that they lead you to discouragement and despair?

I understand. Been there. Done that.

For far too many years, I was my own worst enemy. I didn’t realize it at the time, but as Holy Spirit began to clean me up after I was born again, I realized that many of my problems in life resulted from my wrong thinking patterns.

As I began to align my thinking with God’s thinking as found in the Bible, my life began to change dramatically for the better.

If you are your own worst enemy, let me share with you three Scriptural principles I discovered in Romans 12: 2 that literally changed my life. Let’s take a look at the verse:

Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God—what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect.

There are three important principles in this verse that, if you apply them, will change your life for the better, as they did mine. Here are the three principles:

  1. Do not follow the world’s way of thinking.  The world’s way of thinking leads to death and destruction. What is the world’s way of thinking? It is any way of thinking that opposes God’s Word. God’s way of thinking is directly opposite the world’s way of thinking. So if we see the world going one way–e.g., transgenderism, homosexuality, greed for money, then we must go the opposite way.
  2. Let God change you. God alone can change us, but we must cooperate with Him to effect that change.
  3. Experiencing God’s will for you follows a change in your thinking. When you change your way of thinking to agree with God’s way of thinking (as found in the Bible), you will begin to know and experience God’s perfect will for you.  What is God’s will for you? Blessings and more blessings!

All change in life comes from a change in our thinking. Start thinking God’s way and you will no longer be your own worst enemy. Instead, you will be your own best friend.

What You Focus on Will Grow

If you want something to grow in your life, focus on it.

Focus gives strength to the goal. Focus attracts resources related to the goal.

If you want something to die in your life, starve it.

Do not feed a bad habit. Focus on a good one instead. To focus on eliminating a bad habit will only strengthen the bad habit.

Sin works the same way. Do not focus on eliminating the sin. Focus on allowing Jesus Christ to live through you.

How to Create the Life You Want

Framing Your Future with Your Thoughts

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23

The key to your future–whether successful or not–is your thinking.

The thoughts you think lead you to success or to failure. Your thoughts literally frame your future.

The good news is that you have the power to choose your thoughts. Choose only those thoughts that reflect what you want your future to look like.

Choose thoughts of life, not death! (Deuteronomy 30:19).

You Are MORE Than a Conqueror!

Enforcing the Kingdom of God Right Where You Are

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
_______________________________________

The greatest battle you will ever wage as a Christian is the battle in your mind. In fact, that is the only battle you will ever wage. All battles, whether physical or spiritual, are won or lost in the the mind. But the good news is that you enter that battle with the victory already in hand because of what Jesus Christ did for you through His death and resurrection.

Your job as a follower of Jesus Christ is not to win the battle against Satan; Jesus Christ already did that. Your job is to enforce the victory that Christ has already won against Satan.

Your job is not to conquer Satan. Your job is to take back what he has stolen from you by enforcing Kingdom law.

If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and Lord, you are His ambassador in the earth realm.  As such, you possess all the power and authority you will ever need to rule in this earth.  Wasn’t that God’s mandate to Adam and Eve from the very beginning–to take dominion over the earth and to subdue it (Genesis 1:28)?  This does not mean that we are to take dominion over the people of the earth but over the demonic spirits that rule the earth. We are also to take dominion over the animals, fish, and natural resources of the earth and use them for God’s glory. In short, we are to bring God’s Kingdom into the earth.

Jesus Himself taught us to pray to the Father like this: “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is done in Heaven” (Matthew 6:10).  Well, God’s mandate still stands, but it can be obeyed only by the born-again believer.  Only followers of Christ have His power and authority dwelling within them to enforce the laws of His heavenly kingdom in our earthly one.

So, how do we enforce God’s Kingdom in the earth? By believing and speaking His Word into every situation that requires our doing so.

The Word of God is the instrument of enforcement.  Scripture calls it the “sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:17).  We are commanded by God to wield that sword in our quest to rout the enemy from our earthly domain. And the way we wield the sword of the Spirit is by proclaiming it aloud.

So, the next time Satan tries to bully you in an attempt to make you think you are defeated, turn on him with the sword of the Spirit.  Speak it aloud to him, just as Jesus did when Satan tempted him in the desert.  Three times Jesus repeated, “It is written. It is written. It is written.”  Eventually, Satan fled at the speaking of the Word of God.

Your job as a follower of Jesus Christ is not to win the battle against Satan; Jesus Christ already did that. Your job is to enforce the victory that Christ has already won against Satan.

Satan must flee at the Word of God. Satan is powerless before the Word of God. As we keep our eyes focused on the Word and not on the circumstances of our lives, and as we believe that what God says in His Word is true, the Word will produce the fruit of its promise.

Every single time!

Taking Thoughts Captive

Are you feeling defeated and beaten down? Do you often wonder if things will ever change in your life—if you’ll ever climb out of debt, or ever recover your health, or ever have a happy marriage? If you identify with any of these situations—or a similar one—take heart. You can turn your situation around by changing your way of thinking.

Consider this. The Word of God says that as a man thinks in his heart, so is he (Proverbs 23:7). This means that our thoughts will determine the outcome of our lives. Look at your present situation in life. Is it what you would like it to be? Now look at your thoughts. What have you been thinking about your situation?

Let’s take, for example, your financial situation. Perhaps you’re struggling to make ends meet. If so, what are you thinking about your finances? Are you thinking thoughts like the following: “We’re headed toward bankruptcy,” or “We can’t afford to send our children to college,” or “We’ll never get out of debt”? If this is what you’re thinking, then your bad situation will never change. Why? Because your thoughts are seeds from which your destiny grows. It follows, therefore, that if you’re planting failure thought seeds into your life, you’ll reap a life of failure. The converse is also true. If you plant success thought seeds into your life, you’ll reap a life of success.

“All well and good,” you may be saying. But let’s get practical. How do I plant success thought seeds?

The first step is to learn the difference between a success thought and a failure thought. Simply put, a success thought is a thought that lines up with God’s Word and a failure thought is one that does not. That makes knowing God’s Word pretty important, doesn’t it? How else can we know what lines up with His Word and what doesn’t if we don’t know His Word? God’s Word is the standard—the plumb line—against which we measure the “straightness” of our thinking.

The next step in planting success thought seeds is to become aware of what you’re thinking. At first, this may seem difficult to do because our minds are so accustomed to going their own way. But in order for us to lead successful, overcoming lives, we must pay attention to what we’re thinking, and we must do this all of the time. Only in this way will we be able to recognize whether or not our thoughts agree with God’s thoughts as found in His Word.

The third step in planting success thought seeds is to capture every thought and bring it to Jesus. In Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, chapter 10, verse 5, we find our Lord’s command to bring “every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” This means that every thought we think must be captured and presented to Christ to be examined in the light of His Word. If it does not agree with God’s Word—in other words, if it is a failure thought seed—then it must not be planted in the soil of our mind. If it does agree with God’s Word—in other words, if it is a success thought seed–then it can and should be planted in the soil of our mind.

Remember: Your thoughts are the seeds that determine the course of your life. If you want a good life, plant good thoughts, because as you think in your heart, so you will be..
